Clangers is a British stop-motion children's television series, made of short films about a family of mouse-like creatures who live on, and inside, a small moon-like planet. They speak only in a whistled language. They eat only green soup (supplied by the Soup Dragon) and blue string pudding.

The programs were originally broadcast on BBC1 between 1969 and 1972, followed by a special episode which was broadcast in 1974. The series was revived in 2015, which aired on Sprout for three years.

The British version is narrated by Michael Palin of Monty Python, while the American version is narrated by William Shatner from Star Trek.

Plot

"Clangers is an imaginative show that follows a family of pink, long-nosed, inventive and curious mouse-shaped creatures who live on a small blue planet, out in the starry stretches of outer space. Kind and generous creatures, they communicate with distinctive whistles, and a narrator William Shatner comments on the wondrous and often humorous events which occur in every episode." (link)

History on Sprout

The show premiered on Sprout on June 20, 2015, a day after The Super Sproutlet Show dissolved. To promote, Tiny Clanger appeared on The Sunny Side Up Show with Kaitlin and Chica, and Shatner appeared in spots to promote the series' American television debut. It aired at 10:40AM during the Sunny Side Up Show, 7PM during The Good Night Show, and in the early mornings at 12:30 and 1AM ET. The series enjoyed a full launch on the Sprout network in September.[1]

The series made it past the tenth anniversary rebrand the same year and the launch of Universal Kids on September 9th, 2017, but was pulled on May 20, 2018, along with several other shows.

Only the first 2 seasons aired on Sprout.

Broadcast

The show, a reboot of the 70s program of the same name, was first broadcast on CBeebies during its "Bedtime Hour" block in February 2015 (around the time Ruff-Ruff, Tweet and Dave premiered on Sprout).

The revived version in 2015 has received funding from Sprout, and has been pre-sold to other foreign broadcasters including the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

As from 2018, it is also broadcast on the Belgian channel Ketnet.

Notes

  • This was the last series to premiere prior to the tenth anniversary rebranding.
  • William Shatner was interviewed on The Today Show on June 15th, 2015 to promote the new series.
