Kevin Yamada was the host of The Birthday Show from 2005 to 2007 and The Sunny Side Up Show from 2007 to 2009, when he said he was moving to New York City (referred to onscreen as "the big city") in January since in real life, being on the show left him little time to audition for larger roles,[1] and was replaced by Dennisha Pratt. He also voiced Ricky Rabbit from The Sprout Sharing Show and Puppet Rexy from Caillou. His role on The Birthday Show was a nod to classic children's television, where the hosts interacted with the viewers.[2] Yamada has also read mother's and father's day cards on-air as part of Hooray for Mother's Day and Papa Bear's Day Celebration, respectively[3][4] and also hosted "The Let's Snow Show" with Melanie Martinez from "inside a giant snowglobe."[5] Yamada has also played Ryu in College Humor's Street Fighter: The Later Years and appeared in the film "Old Dogs" (with Noel MacNeal and John Kennedy).
Yamada auditioned for Sprout after leaving a job in Hawaii working for Ohia Productions, performing and teaching children's theater. Sprout was looking for a person with those qualifications.
"Kevin and Melanie are the first members of the PBS KIDS Sprout Family who appear in between programs leading fun and engaging activities that encourage learning. Kevin especially loves to share viewer submitted birthday greetings and celebrations, while Melanie plays games makes arts and crafts and tells stories during bedtime hours." (link)
