LazyTown is an English-language Icelandic television series made by an international crew and performed by a cast from Iceland, the United States, and the United Kingdom. It is based upon a children's book from 1995 created by Magnús Scheving, an aerobics champion who also plays the secondary main character character Sportacus.

Plot

"Meet Sportacus, LazyTown's slightly-above-average hero who inspires the kids of LazyTown to be active and helps them along the way. However, Robbie Rotten, the silly resident villain, is intent on keeping LazyTown..lazy..." (link)

History on Sprout

Nick Jr. bought LazyTown Entertainment on August 16th, 2004 for a six year contract, but around October 15th, 2007, they completely abandoned it until their contract with Nick Jr. expired on July 19th, 2010. Websites like Kidscreen announced the show was coming to Sprout and debuted on the channel on September 5th, 2011, the same year that Turner Broadcasting acquired the LazyTown Entertainment company. Turner would eventually commission two new seasons and 26 episodes of LazyTown to be filmed in 2012 and 2013.

"Watch LazyTown videos, play games and print coloring pages of LazyTown's Sportacus, Stephanie, and Robbie Rotten. You can see LazyTown September 5th on Sprout at 8:30am ET, and 2pm ET." (link)

The series received complaints from grown-up Sprouts on Sprout's Facebook page after its premiere on the network. To name a few:

"Lazy Town.....What can I say. My kids do not like it. They are glued to the TV until Lazy Town comes on and then they start playing with their books so we shut off the TV and read. I really miss The Wiggles being on at 1pm cst. They would dance and sing wth [sic] them and then thy [sic] knew it was nap time. I guess I will have to start DVRing The Wiggles throughout the dy [sic] and start watching them at 1.....Very Disappointed with th [sic] changes to make way for Lazy Town!!!!"
"We will not be watching Sprout until Lazy Town is gone. The characters TERRIFY my child, and we will not support any programming that refers to healthy foods as "candy". Replacing The Wiggles with this awful Lazy Town show was a really bad move."
"We are one of Sprouts biggest fans. We watch faithfully and support Sprout. We try to attend as many of their events as we can since we live local to the studio. I have to say that I am disappointed to put it politely with Lazy Town! What a weird and creepy show! I don't know what else to say! I would much rather have a show like Super Why that helps teach the alphabet. Sorry Sprout but no home run with this one!"
"Sprout - PLEASE get rid of Lazytown. For the last few years, have always thought your channel was geared towards toddlers and preschoolers. Well quite frankly - Lazytown scared the willies out of my young children. There was quite a bit of fear induced crying and begging for "Sprout". WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU DITCH THE WIGGLES for what is a cheap, kitchy Wiggles RIP OFF. Move stuff around but really, either change your entire format and go for a more mature child audience or stick to what WORKS." (link)

Sportacus once made a guest appearance on The Sunny Side Up Show. Sportacus and Mayor Meanswell also appeared alongside Sprout original character Bean in spin-off block The Super Sproutlet Show, where the series aired at 2PM ET. It also aired during Sprout's Wiggly Waffle at 8:30. In later years, the series aired early in the morning at 7AM ET.

Sprout renewed LazyTown for a third season on April 22nd, 2013, along with The Chica Show for its second.[1] The third season would premiere on May 27th, 2013. Stephanie appeared on The Sunny Side Up Show that same day, with Chloe Lang reprising her role as the character here.

When Sprout partnered with Produce for Kids, the show got promotions and appearances. Sportacus and Chica also appeared in a handful of Let's Move commercials with Michelle Obama, and themes from LazyTown were included in the Family Challenge app.

LazyTown survived the start of the tenth anniversary rebrand, but stopped airing on Sprout a year later on September 26th, 2016, along with Tree Fu Tom, Earth to Luna!, Boj, and Poppy Cat, as the broadcast rights to air the show reached their expiration date. Turner Broadcasting still had the rights to the LazyTown Entertainment company until 2024.

Notes

  • When the series aired on Sprout, the Sportacus intros were removed/absent along with NBC Kids which made the Intro shorter. Although on NBC Kids, the 2004-2007 (2011-2014 on Sprout) theme song was only 30 seconds long.
  • On Sprout, the logo for LazyTown was the logo from 2010, although when the theme song used between 2004 and 2007 played, the original logo (used from 2004-2010) was seen.
  • Clips of Stephanie and later Pixel sleeping from "Sleepless in LazyTown" were used in Sprout's Snooze-a-Thon and "La La Lullaby," which played at the end of The Good Night Show.
  • The show has become a meme in recent years, with songs like "We Are Number One" and "The Mine Song." The films Bee Movie and The Lorax have seen similar treatment.
  • Look-alikes of characters, also happens in certain situations, with one being Stingy, resembling a classmate, appearing on the Moral Orel episode "God's Blunders", and Stephanie, compared to other actresses, appearing like as she is an adult on other projects, such as the pink instrument playing quartet for Jason Derulo's music video "Swalla", also resembling actors who played for LazyTown Extra, and Evylenn's legendary Power Chord outfit.
  • LazyTown Extra was supposed to air on Sprout, but it is unknown if it did.
