The topic of this page has a wiki of its own: Berenstain Bears Wiki.

The Berenstain Bears is a Canadian children's animated series based on the children's book series of the same name by Stan and Jan Berenstain. The series follows the lives of a family of anthropomorphic bears who learn a moral or safety-related lesson during each episode. Because PBS co-owned Sprout when the channel was launched, it aired a variety of shows from its archive library on Sprout, including reruns of The Berenstain Bears.

Plot

"Based on the best-selling book series, The Berenstain Bears is a charming animated comedy celebrating furry family values and good old-fashioned Bear Country living. The fun-loving family of Bears show love, loyalty and humor to overcome any obstacle." (link)

For Parents

"Kids learn about social interaction from watching their families. One of the most important lessons is to learn that it's OK to disagree as long as you do it with respect."

History on Sprout

The show premiered on September 26, 2005, along with several other shows, to celebrate the launch of the Sprout network. Before that, they released it on Sprout On Demand on Comcast. Since then, the show became the second highest performing show on the Sprout channel, third on Sprout on Demand, and sixth on the channel's website, SproutOnline.com. In November of that year, a marathon of the show was held to pay tribute to Stan Berenstain, the co-author of the original books who died.

In 2006, Kevin Yamada hosted Papa Bear's Day Celebration, named after the show's father, where he read father's day cards.[1]

Unlike other PBS shows, this show survived the 10th-anniversary rebranding, along with Caillou, but didn't make it to the Universal Kids rebranding, with its last airing being on the day the channel launched.

It had a Sprout Diner snack, Berenstain Bears' Breakfast Oatmeal.

It had a Birthday Show activity, Berenstain Bears' Picnic Party. The segment was also available in the Birthday Parties podcast.

The show aired at 10AM, 1AM, and 7:30 ET when Sprout launched, and later aired at 9:30AM on weekend mornings,[2] 11:30 ET during The Sunny Side Up Show and 6PM ET during The Good Night Show, after the first link on the latter program, previously after Goodnight Games, and later after Star Talks. However in 2010, it stopped airing during Sunny Side Up and was replaced by Chloe's Closet. In later years, it aired at 2:30PM ET.

The 1980s Berenstain Bears on a Sprout card.

  • The show was referred to as "Berenstein Bears" in its Play By Play segment.
  • A screencap of the opening from the original 1980s specials was used in 2011 in a Sprout birthday card for Sproutlet Luke, 2, of Texas. Other birthday cards, as well as Tip Tap Sprout, used illustrations or covers from the original books.
  • It is unknown why it wasn't removed in 2015, as PBS still owns the rights to it.
  • The Berenstain Bears was the only series to not make it to the Universal Kids rebrand due to the expiration of the channel's rights to air the series.
  • Clips of Papa Bear calling on the phone in "The Big Election" were included on the show's Sprout Diner websiode and Benedict Campbell rerecords his lines as he reprises the role as Papa Bear.
  • Clips of Sister and Brother Bear sleeping in "The Wishing Star" were included in Sprout's Snooze-a-Thon, as well as "La La Lullaby," which aired at the end of The Good Night Show.
  • Nina and her Sproutlet friends once did a "Sister Bear Hug" stretch on The Good Night Show. The segment appeared in "Snuggley Favorites" and "Grandparents."[3]
  • When the show aired in later years, a background with the moon and stars on the sides of the screen was seen.
  • This is by far the only PBS/Nelvana show that aired on Sprout to not have been part of the Bookworm Bunch, which George Shrinks and Seven Little Monsters were in.
  • Jan & Stan Berenstain met on their 1st day of class at University of the Arts in Philadelphia; they were married 5 years later.
  • The first Berenstain Bears book, published in 1962, was "The Big Honey Hunt." The series was originally part of "Beginner Books," which also consisted of Dr. Seuss stories.
  • Sister Bear was born in the 1974 book "The Berenstain Bears’ New Baby," while Brother Bear has been around from the beginning.
  • From the late 2000s to early 2010s, Sony Pictures Animation worked on an animated film adaptation of the original book series that never came to fruition.
